Light on Flooded Meadow - reworked

I'm still not sure about this one. Sometimes paintings that I'm not 100% happy with keep niggling at me until I alter them. On other occasions I tell myself just to learn from it and move on. Anyway on this occasion I couldn't resist altering the painting.

My thought was that the light on the water in the original was too cool and that it wasn't 'singing' against the surrounding blues. A glaze of Raw Sienna has certainly warmed the lights - whether too much or not I'm not quite sure. Also, following a suggestion from the Wet Canvas Landscape forum, I also extended the light behind the tree in an attempt to improve the balance of the composition. I guess I'm going to have to live with this some more and see what happens.

Keith,
Glad to see you back posting and painting again. I know about the self doubt and "dry" times – I'm in one right now. I work full time and getting paint time in has been hard lately. Just getting away for two weeks has made me "afraid" and insecure somehow and I'm having the hardest time getting started again. But I think that is pretty typical of artists, so I guess it just proves we are REAL artists. Huh? I'm so happy for you to get away on a plein air trip. Can't wait to see what you bring back!
I think your first instincts on this painting were good enough, but I would like to know which photo is more color correct. The first shot and original is darker and looks like a night scene with moon light. The second and "improved" painting looks like a late afternoon, almost pre-sunset and the whole scene is a lot brighter looking. That makes it hard to tell. Somehow the yellow in the water doesn't seem to match the sky. The sky is so gray blue. What is the water reflecting? Maybe you've gotten too many opinions on this one and totally lost your first initial impression of what you saw. Very dangerous! LOL

Marilyn - Good to hear from you and thanks for your thoughts on this painting.

It was late afternoon and, as far as I can remember, the sun was quite low in the sky but just above the picture area. I think the second version is more accurate in terms of tone although I agree with you that I have probably pushed the warmth of the sunlight on the water a little too far. A learning piece I think!
