Ice on Erewash Canal


A small 10 x 8 oil on MDF panel painted earlier today. Carlson warns against painting the unusual and I think this is verging on one of those occasions. However, this piece was never meant for sale and I couldn't resist having a stab at this strange light effect. The underside of this bridge was receiving an intense warm light reflected from the canal.

Wonderful and guttsey! Just love that lit underside of the bridge. I've rarely seen frozen water in person, what a wonderful challenge to capture the magic. Beautiful work.

Thanks Marilyn, although this particular light effect looked slightly surreal, I thought it would be good practice to try and record it.

I found your blog via Marc Hanson's blog - I love this painting! I used to live by a bridge almost exactly like that, and the way the ice formed in the lagoon beneath it.....well, you captured that perfectly!
